Frequently asked questions

How do I add 20% VAT to an amount?
Multiply by 1.20. The net amount × 1.20 gives the gross (VAT-inclusive) total; the VAT itself is net × 0.20.
How do I remove 20% VAT from a gross amount?
Divide by 1.20. Gross ÷ 1.20 gives the net amount; the VAT is the difference. Do not subtract 20% — that gives the wrong figure.
What is the VAT fraction for the 20% rate?
One-sixth (1/6). The VAT contained in any 20%-inclusive gross price is gross × 1/6.
